i do recall hunter saying that he wished that they had made a studio album of that material- and i wish they did too! had they gone into the studio in '72 and made a dead album instead of "Ace" (which i think is one of the better GD studio efforts) they would have had an amazing record. and if they had recorded earlier material that had only been released on live albums it could have included studio versions of bertha and wharf rat as well. imagine...

side one:

bertha
greatest story
ramble on rose
cassidy
brown eyed women
playin'

side two:

jack straw
tennessee jed
black throated wind
he's gone
looks like rain
wharf rat
saturday night

that runs a little long for an lp, but any of that material could have been amazing in the studio- especially if they did it like they did "Ace", using acoustic guitar, pedal steel, piano, organ, etc.. there may have even been some hits on there. oh well...

yes- the 1972 bob weir record "Ace". i'm not sure that i effectively communicated this but, in my post, i was trying to imagine a potential track list for a fantasy 1972 grateful dead record that could have existed had the band gone into the studio and recorded one proper album of material for the year instead of recording the "Ace" songs in the studio and the "E72" songs live. purely hypothetical and entirely irrelevant, but still fun to think about.

Only The Ramones could fit that many songs on one side of vinyl.

my two favorite bands. 17 year-old me would have killed 29 year-old me.
